Winter in Cote D’Azur

On 29th December we left a dreary -1°C morning in Oltrepo’ and three hours later discovered a spring-wonderland in Cote d’Azur.

With temperatures as mild as 18°C at this time of year it is not surprising that mimosa, roseemary and a host of other plants were already blooming along with mandarins and lemons- the baubles of milder climes it seems.

As it will be a long few months before the Towers’ get to experience this kind of a warm up, we’ll keep these images in mind as a reminder of better weather to come!

Preparing a New Year’s eve meal fit for a king in Théoule sur Mer with lovely friends is the best way to end the year….

These are the fruits of our labours:

Baskets of guacamole (home made of course) with prawn and cherry tomoato, cocktail sauce dip with prawns, bruschette with fish and goat cheese as well as crab salad and provençal anchoives for starters


Pasta with st jacques, prawns and cherry tomatoes (with an essential dash of white wine and chilli) and smoked salmon and pomegranate (supposed to symbolise plenty and bring good luck for the new year) salad.

I also superstitiously put a coin under each plate for good measure…fingers crossed!
